Companies rush into Kaohsiung free port

At a promotional seminar held in Kaohsiung recently, 10 shippers and other shipping-related operators signed letters of intent to move into the Kaohsiung Free Port Zone. The enthusiasm of the signers, which included Yang Ming Marine, Taiwan Hanjin Logistics Co., Ltd., Lien Hai Terminal & Stevedoring Co., Ltd., China Container Terminal Corporation, Yes Logistics, Trust Logistics Corp., Asia Pacific Container Inc., Kaofeng Container Terminal Co., Ltd., Unitop Corporation, Pacific Star Group, indicated that prospects for the free port are bright.

The plan formulated by the Kaohsiung Harbor Bureau and National Tax Administration of Kaohsiung City calls for the submission of applications for establishment within the free port to begin in the third quarter of this year and for review of the applications to be completed in the fourth quarter. Kaohsiung Free Port is to begin operating in January 2005.
