On July 9, Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Mei-Yueh met with a group of Dupont executives to discuss the newly established Dupont Taiwan Technical Application Center (DTTC). Representatives from Dupont included Craig Naylor, Group VP for DuPont Asia Pacific Region and DuPont Electronic & Communication Technologies, Tom Powell, President of Dupont Greater China, S.T. Tsay, President of Dupont Taiwan, and Walt Cheng, regional director of Microcircuit Materials (MCM) for DuPont Electronic Technologies - Asia Pacific.
Minister Ho started the meeting by conveying her gratitude to Dupont for its long-term commitment to Taiwan. Mr. Naylor thanked the Taiwan government for its support and encouragement of Dupont, emphasizing that Dupont Taiwan was one of the company's first subsidiaries established outside of the US, and continues to be one of the Dupont's largest investments outside of the US.
Mr. Powell said Dupont Taiwan's importance does not merely lie in its business turnover, noting that for 36 years Dupont Taiwan has provided services and products for Taiwanese businesses entering the global markets, as well as cooperation in technical services. He acknowledged that Taiwan has especially gained prominence and attention in the global market as a leader in electronics and high-tech applications.
In their meeting, Minister Ho and the Dupont executives discussed the progress of the DTTC, which aims to provide customized services to electronics and hi-tech industry clusters in the area. The Dupont contingent noted that the center now has over 20
R&D personnel at the DTTC, along with over 120 overseas personnel providing specialized technical support in
R&D. The DTTC's location will be split between the Dupont Electronic Materials plant site in Taoyuan and the Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park.
Mr. Naylor, who also serves as VP for DuPont Electronic & Communication Technologies, said he was fully confident that Taiwan's industrial capacity and output would increase with Taiwan's flourishing flat-panel display, semiconductor, and
IT industries. He said that the establishment of the DTTC would create a win-win situation for all parties by giving Taiwan industries quick access to concentrated knowledge services and providing "alliance" support for Dupont, as it progresses in developing advanced materials for electronics technology.
Mr. Tsay reiterated Dupont's promise to "set its roots" in Taiwan and uphold sustainable development. Speaking of the future, Mr. Tsay also said that in addition to Dupont's commitment to safety, health, and the environment and respecting people's core values, the company will continue to "localize" technology, while furthering its long-term cooperative partnership with Taiwan.
