The Tourism Bureau, aiming to promote the upgrading of Taiwan's 2,400 mid-size hotels, will launch a program that will establish a rating system and offer special low-interest loans in early July.
The profit-making potential of mid-size hotels is revealed by the high level of business generated during the recent Computex computer industry convention in Taipei; some high-quality mid-size hotels were even able to charge rates nearly as high as those of five-star hotels.
The Tourism Bureau's Hotel Inspection and Supervision Center points out that, while a small number of mid-size hotels are newly constructed, most are already quite old and require renovations in order to meet market demands. In addition to hotels, entertainment complexes and travel agencies will also be allowed to take advantage of this upgrading program.
The center says that, as the business strategies of hotel operators are relatively conservative, it has determined that a specific and transparent rating system is the best method to promote the upgrading of facilities and services, and ultimately increase revenues.
Also, in the initial stages of this program, the center will focus on hotels with fifty rooms or more in an effort to develop hotels with special styles based on the characteristics of the local area. (Tourism Bureau, GIO, Economic Daily News)
