LEDs (light emitting diodes), long a common sight on all sorts of electronic devices, are expected to become even more ubiquitous as they are adopted in place of incandescent light bulbs. With this change will come big business opportunities. And Taiwan, which has seen its LED industry grow rapidly over just the last few years to become the second largest in the world, is obviously the place to get on board as this semiconductor lighting revolution begins.
Taiwan's Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association declares that LED lighting is the next big potential market after TFT-LCD. It claims the era of LED lighting is set to bring revolutionary changes to the ways people light their lives.
Taiwan's LED industry is in a prime position for further growth. Industry projections put the production value of this sector at
NTD 25.3 billion in 2004. This would account for 21% of global production and make Taiwan the second largest LED supplier behind Japan, which is forecast to be responsible for almost half of world production at 47%.
The National Science Council's Electro-Optics Unit also sees great potential in the LED sector, predicting that LED lighting will be commonplace within five to ten years. It notes that the first floor of Taipei's Technology Building, where the NSC's offices are currently located, is often visited by overseas and domestic businesspeople because it is the first office building in the world to be illuminated by white LED lighting.
Forecasts also see the LED market nearly doubling from
USD 3.2 billion in 2004 to
USD 5.6 billion in 2008. (CNA)
