Vice Minister Shih Yen-shiang represented the
MOEA in participating in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Unaxis TFT-LCD equipment plant in Chunan on June 8. At the ceremony, Vice Minister Shih and Unaxis CEO Heinz Kundert signed a letter of intent for a strategic alliance.
Swiss-based Unaxis is active around the globe as a leading high tech equipment supplier. Its operations are focused primarily on the five fields of semiconductor equipment (wafer processing, assembly and packaging and display technology), data storage solutions, coating services, vacuum technology, and components and special systems (optics and aerospace technology). Unaxis utilizes its core capabilities in thin film, vacuum and precision technology to create integrated solutions that afford customers tremendous benefits. This high-tech leader boasts eighty subsidiaries in a total of twenty-five countries, and has established research centers in Europe, Asia and the USA.
Taiwan has grown to become the second largest production base for TFT-LCD in the world. Consequently, in an effort to be close to its market, Unaxis has coordinated with the government's Two Trillion, Twin Stars Plan to expand its
R&D and manufacturing operations in Taiwan. In addition to the recent establishment of a research and development center here in Taiwan, Unaxis has also decided to invest in the construction of a plant at the Chunan branch of the Hsinchu Science-base Industrial Park. This plant will manufacture crucial Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) and Physical Vapor Disposition (PVD) equipment required by Taiwan's TFT-LCD makers.
With the completion of this new plant, Unaxis will become the first TFT-LCD equipment supplier capable of making deliveries of PECVD and PVD equipment directly within Taiwan. This will facilitate the integration of the up stream and down stream ends of the TFT-LCD production chain and enhance the quality of optical electronics production technology. It will also play a crucial role in promoting the upgrading of Taiwan's production capabilities, propelling Taiwan's TFT-LCD industry towards a new milestone.
The signing of the letter of intent at the groundbreaking ceremony makes Unaxis the
MOEA's eightieth strategic partner. By setting up Asia Pacific operations centers in Taiwan, multinational corporations can take advantage of the logistical support provided by Taiwan's geographical location and comprehensive production system.
