Taiwan currently has two international airports and 18 domestic airports, with 40 airlines providing flight services to and from the island. These airports serve 85 international routes and 111 freight routes to 79 cities worldwide. In 2006, international passenger volume (including transit passengers) reached a record-breaking 26.36 million passengers. Freight weight was over 1.76 metric tons. The Taoyuan International Airport (formerly the Chiang Kai Shek International Airport), located in Taoyuan County in Northern Taiwan, provides fully convenient air transportation to all the major cities of the world, whether for business, travel, or cargo-freight purposes. The Kaohsiung International Airport, located in the Southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung, primarily serves cities in Southeast and Northeast Asia. In addition, Taichung Airport is currently being expanded to serve as an international airport for Central Taiwan. The Civil Aeronautics Administration is looking to further develop Taiwan’s civil air transport infrastructure. To this end, the CAA will continue to improve the nation’s airports and their related services and equipment, so as to fully satisfy passenger and freight needs and provide safe, high-quality air transport services.
Formerly known as the Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, the Taoyuan International Airport is located in Tayuan Township, Taoyuan County, about 40 kilometers from Taipei City. It covers a total area of 1,223 hectares and can handle a total of 29 million passengers and 1.76 million tons of cargo per year. The airport handled a total of about 22.86 million passengers and 1.7 million tons of cargo in 2006.
The Taoyuan Free Trade Zone, covering 45 hectares on the eastern side of the airport, is currently under construction, with Stage I development (covering 16 hectares) already completed. Builted and operated by the Far East Glory Group, the FTZ began operations on Jan. 1, 2006, and can handle 1 million tons of cargo per year. The new hub will greatly enhance the airport's freight handling capability as well as the standard of Taiwan’s air transport services.
Kaohsiung International Airport is located in the Hsiaokang district of Kaohsiung City. It is situated on a total area of 244 hectares. Kaohsiung International's handling capacity is 6.09 million passengers and 100,000 tons of cargo a year, making the airport a significant contributor to the economic development of the greater Kaohsiung area. A total of 7.13 million passengers and about 77,000 tons of cargo passed through the airport in 2006.
Taiwan's domestic airports serve major cities such as Taipei, Hualien, Taichung, Taitung, Chiayi, and Tainan. A number of Taiwan’s domestic airports also serve a limited number of international flights: Hualien airport offers charter flights to Japan, Korea, and Macao; Makung Airport offers flights to Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Macao, and Vietnam; Jinmen Airport offers flights to Macao and Singapore; and Taichung Airport offers flights to Japan, Korea, and Vietnam.
Future expansion plans for Taichung Airport include direct flights to major ports in China. Construction is currently underway to convert Taichung Airport into an international airport mainly servicing flights throughout Asia.
