Taiwan has over 80 industrial parks spread throughout the entire island on all coasts, covering over 11,000 hectares of land, with another 25,000 hectares under development. Industrial parks have served as the cornerstone of Taiwan’s industrial development since their creation in the 1970s, and are the foundation of the island’s economic success. Under the guidance of the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), Taiwan’s industrial parks were originally designed to manage land development with rising industrial growth and environmental considerations.
Today, the industrial zone concept in Taiwan has expanded to science parks and parks that emphasize manufacturing support for high-tech industries. The island’s premier science parks include the Hsinchu Science Based Industrial Park and the recently completed Nankang Software Development Park. In addition, the government has recently built high-tech industrial parks in Yunlin and Tainan counties, as well as coastal industrial parks that cater to offshore industries.
